Ayurveda And Yoga

Ayurveda means wisdom of life and is derived from two Sanskrit words ayus and veda. Ayus meaning life and veda meaning wisdom. Ayurveda is considered by many scholars as the oldest healing science.

It originated in India over 5000 years ago and is often called the "Mother of All Healing". It stems from ancient vedic culture and was taught for many thousands of years in an oral tradition by accomplished masters to their disciples.

Ayurveda traces its origin to the Vedas - the atharva veda in particular. Early works of Ayurveda include Sushrutha samahitha of Sushrutha and Charaka samahitha attributed to Charaka.

Ayurveda places great emphasis on prevention and encourages the maintenance of health through close attention to balance in one's life, right thinking, diet, lifestyle and the use of herbs.

Holistic Approach
Ayurveda maintains that all life must be supported by energy in balance. The holistic approach to health means that the body, the mind and the soul are brought into harmony. This is accomplished by adjusting the bodily energies, the doshas.

Individual Approach
The individual approach to one's health is the reason for the continuous success of the Ayurveda treatments. In Ayurveda, every treatment plan is unique because every patient is unique. One patient may require the extracts of a particular herb to regain health or, in the Ayurveda saying, to re-establish the balance of his doshas, whereas the same herb would not have any effect with another patient.

Ayurveda Diet
Ayurveda is not only about healing diseases but also about preventing these by living a healthy life. Therefore, the treatment (and more importantly the prevention of diseases) includes changes in the lifestyle and food habits.

Diet is an important area in the practice of Ayurveda. So the food has to be prepared under the guidance of a chef who can understand the Ayurveda doctor's prescription. At Estuary Island we have specialist cooks to prepare the Ayurveda diet.
